  28 Days Later
of 5

An experimental violence-ridden chimp is set free from a lab and touches off a plague the likes of which the world has never seen. Four weeks after this initial incident, a young man awakens from a coma and finds he is among a handful of very few survivors left to fight off the "infecteds".

Fans of the horror and especially zombie genres should really like this film. Thankfully too, there is a really intelligent scenario here that saves the film for the rest of us.

The story is told and photographed in a very documented fashion. This may aid in storytelling, but served also to separate me from the action; I never felt drawn into the picture. I also didn't care about the lead characters. Consequently, the "scary" moments seemed like I was watching the whole thing on a newsreel and not really threatened by any of the action on screen. There are a few nicely scripted suspenseful moments, but anyone whole calls this a jump-out-of-your-seat-thriller is truly oversensitive.

This is not to say that 28 Days Later is not frightening — it is. But it so on the whole of its idea and the premise that humanity’s thirst for technology coupled with our penchant for killing each other will be our ultimate undoing.

A quality picture but it has just as many shortcomings as it does triumphs. The story has a nice flow and some really good aspects -- but there is not enough interest in the characters. The script is decent – but there isn't enough dialogue (and clearly not enough good dialogue). Some clever surprises and suspenseful moments – but never "scary" or unpredictable.

Certainly among the better horror flicks of the last 10 years. But not the high concept, high execution suspense/horror/thriller many of us are thirsting for.

Directed by Danny Boyle.
