A
less than factual account
of Thomas Jefferson's
days as emissary to France,
where his personal life
and young country's government
are both scrutinized.
Some nice performances
counter balance a slow
paced film that otherwise
is largely unsatisfying.
A couple interesting characters,
fanciful costuming and
occasional interesting
dialogue may hold one's
interest long enough to
warrant its long runtime.
There's also an interesting
dynamic into the persona
of Thomas Jefferson, who
is truly one of the most
interesting people in
the history of the United
States or any other country.
But the realization that
the film is largely fictional
dampens this, too.
Jefferson's real life
is certainly interesting
enough to base a picture
on without having to delve
too deeply into embellishment.
Directed by James Ivory.
