A team of underdogs takes a once-promising thoroughbred to the top of the racing world. Based on the true story.
Seabiscuit is a feel-good masterpiece. That may sound a bit strong, but I truly believe that the film excels as few films do when it comes to tugging at the heartstrings. After all we are talking about a horse here, right? But there's a lot more than horses in this film. In the end, all good (and bad) films are about human drama and Seabiscuit provides us with plenty of that. The back-stories of the owner, trainer and jockeys are worthy of being told on their own. But their common element is another story of triumph—that of a racehorse.
After you see it once for its bold story and drama, watch it again and focus on the more artistic elements of cinematography, music and script structure. You'll find that Seabiscuit combines everything you would want in film entertainment in a successful way that is rarely seen. It is a high quality film that doesn't fall short in entertainment value.
Wow, all that was high praise wasn't it? The truth is I don't think Seabiscuit is the best film ever made, nor is it even the best film of 2003. But it is a well-polished film that should be appreciated.
Directed by Gary Ross.
