A
deep sea diving team called to investigate
the mysterious sinking of a U.S. nuclear
submarine makes contact with a previously
unknown intelligent life form.
A
long admired landmark science fiction
film. Like most of Cameron's efforts,
The Abyss is high on concept and in execution.
Few writer/directors work both sides
of the issue like Cameron and that is
certainly evident here. A feast for the
eyes and mind, this volatile undersea
situation is wonderfully photographed
and masterfully paced, with special effects
that are still impressive even by today's
standards.
Ed
Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and
Michael Biehn are wonderful in this film.
It's obvious they have a full understanding
of the script and what is required to
make the material work. The Abyss may
fall a bit short in otherworldly mystery
compared to similar pictures, but I'm
not so sure that's of much importance.
This film is an introspective look into
humanity, where most other films feel
more like an extension of humanity.
The
Abyss is a must-own for all movie fans.
Directed
by James Cameron.
