  Signs
of 5

A disillusioned reverend and his family have alien visitors in their Pennsylvania cornfield, with this same phenomenon occurring across the globe.

M. Night Shyamalan's Signs is more than just a frightening alien flick; he successfully melds this with some higher theory sparked by our ex-clergyman (Gibson) who has begun to doubt his faith. There is quite a bit of attention given to the idea that there is perhaps a higher being looking out for us and that there are no coincidences. This idea comes to a nice fruition in the film's final scene where we find each character's traits playing a part.

As a creepy sci-fi flick, the writer/director succeeds again. Familiar plot devices are used well to build suspense and intrigue. All the principles perform well. Gibson seems at home in this role and Phoenix warms to lighter role than he usually plays. The younger characters are really nice to watch and totally convincing, played by Culkin and Breslin. Shyamalan puts himself in a smallish role, we'll forgive his average performance here and applaud his fine filmmaking efforts.

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan.
